Evacuation of U.S Citizens from China

The United States continues to evacuate U.S Citizens from Wuhan, China the center of the coronavirus outbreak. The U.S government has been taking this very seriously, whoever is evacuated from China could be susceptible to being quarantined for at least 14 days.  The first airplane with deported U.S. citizens landed last week at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, California. Every passenger was quarantined for 14 days due to federal orders. The same will happen to the178 passengers who arrived overnight at Travis Air Force Base, southwest of Sacramento, California. The number of people who have died from the virus has increased severely now, it is said that the death toll is 565. A child on a plane who was being evacuated from China along with his parents developed a fever during the flight and immediately after they landed he was put in isolation along with one parent. “We do not believe these people pose a threat in the location they'll be held," said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Respiratory Diseases. This evacuation comes as the 12th case of Coronavirus in the U.S is confirmed in Wisconsin. It is now clear that the virus is passed on like the flu through small droplets of coughing or sneezing. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $100 million to improve detection, isolation and treatment efforts for the coronavirus.

1)Have you ever gone to school knowing you’re sick and not considered how your sickness could spread? What do you think of this?

2)Do you think that putting people in a public quarantine is fair or even a good idea (as in all the sick people together)? Why or why not?

3)What do you think that should be done to stop the virus from spreading? Why?

4)How do you think the coronavirus affected families? Why?

  1. 1. I have never gone to school with something worse than a cough or a runny nose. I have considered how a virus could spread and the effects that virus could have on my fellow students. If I unknowingly had a fatal or harmful disease, such as strep throat, or the flu and I went to school, then later found out that I had it I would be concerned for the safety of my peers.

    2. I do not think it is fair to have all of the sick people in the same room, but it is understandable if there is not enough space for individual quarantine. I believe that quarantine is not preferable, but if it is genuinely for the good of the public (which it is), then I would support it depending on the treatment of the people and conditions of that specific quarantined place.

    3. I think that there should be dedicated locations large enough for patients to receive the attention and care that they need, as well as being able to get the research done to be able to successfully heal the Corona virus so that there are no more fatalities.

    4. I think that families have been devastated and confused because they had nothing to do with it, the people effected were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately, due to underreporting they paid a far too great of a price.

  2. 1) Yes, I have gone to school sick with the risk of infecting other people. Although it may have been selfish of me I normally choose to go to school when I'm sick when I know it is a day where I have something important happening. However, if I am very sick I will choose to stay home with the intention of not worsening my sickness or spreading it to others.

    2) I do not support the idea of a public quarantine. Although it may seem like a good idea at first, after consideration it is not. It is highly unlikely that each person's sickness is the same. By putting every sick person together people could be recovering and then catch a different sickness of another person in the quarantine.

    3) I agree with Henry that to stop the virus from spreading more extensive research must be done. Hopefully, more research would help find how the virus spreads and how they are stopped. People should take extra precautions such as avoiding sharing drinks, continually washing hands, and staying out of range of those infected. It is unnecessary to go to extreme measures unless the virus becomes a truly wide-spread risk.

    4) I believe that the Coronavirus has affected families in several different ways. The families who have lost relatives due to the disease have experienced the worse of the virus. Also, other families may be in distress with the concern that someone they love could catch the disease, although these families are affected less severely.

  3. 1. I have gone to school when I have had a cold or something that I could manage the day through. Although it was wrong to not consider others when I have a cold or something less severe, when I am sick with something that is worse and makes me incapable of going to school, I will stay home to feel better and not get others sick.

    2. Like Jemma said, people may be recovering from their sickness, and catch another one. If their immune system is down and they are surrounded by other germs, it is extremly dangerous for them. However, to keep a virus away from the general public, it may seem like a good idea.

    3. I agree with Henry that there needs to be funding so more research can be done on the Coronavirus to stop it from continuously spreading. People should also get the medical help they need, and people who don't have the Coronavirus can be caseous about not putting yourself at risk for it.

    4. As we read in the article, a young child was sent into a quarantine with one parent. If I was the parent of the kid, I would be very worried and would want the best for him. Although not a lot of people have died, it is devastating to find out that your family member has died.

  4. 1) To agree with Henry, I have never gone to school if I have a fever or am really sick, but sometimes if I just have a cold or a cough I will go. Usually I am thinking more about not missing school rather than spreading the sickness, so I should probably be more aware about not attending school and infecting other people in the future.

    2) I think putting people with the coronavirus in a public quarantine is a good idea to stop the spread of the virus. To agree with Henry, it would be preferable if all the sick patients had individual spaces, but if the money and resources are not available, quarantine is definitely a good option to remove the sick patients from healthy people.

    3) To stop the virus from spreading, I think those sick with coronavirus should be removed from the rest of the world. Cities with sick patients should close their borders to contain the virus, and those who are infected should be placed in quarantine in cities with closed borders. I think only doctors or scientists that are trying to find a cure to coronavirus should be allowed near those infected to further stop the spread of the virus.

    4) I think coronavirus affects many families. If a person knows a member of their family has a contagious virus that does not yet have a cure, that would be really scary. They would be concerned for that person’s health and probably worried that the person might not make it. Also, they would not be able to be near their sick family member because the virus is contagious, so the infected person would have to stay away from healthy people.

  5. 1, Yes I have gone to school knowing I am sick. I have considered not going to school but I usually just shrug it off, and that it wouldn't cause many problems. I think like this because most of the time it isn't that big of a problem.

2, In this situation public quarantine is an awful idea. Public quarantine is all the Chinese government wants to do as they have sent minimal supplies and help to the doctors in the Wuhan Hospitals which have been working 21 hours a day. Not only does this quarantine not let people leave and get in, but it also blocks transport and supplies from getting in. The Chinese American community in the U.S. has fundraised over a million dollars in supplies for the doctors in Wuhan but they can't get the supplies past the quarantine. This quarantine is a political strategy for the president of China (Xi Jinping) to make it seem like the situation is under control and that they don't need outside help. The reason he is doing this is trying to convince the outside world that the Chinese economy is not going to slow down or stop for even a huge disease like coronavirus and that the nation of China is strong. But in reality, the people inside are struggling and suffering.

3, Stopping the virus is not going to be easy. First, the Chinese government needs to remove all taxes on supplies to Wuhan so the global community can help with this global crisis at ground zero. Then the government also needs to increase pay for the doctors risking their lives to fight the disease. China is experiencing a severe doctor shortage, and after this coronavirus outbreak, it may just get even worse as doctors aren't getting the respect and pay that they deserve.
Another step into solving the virus is to make sure that the Chinese gov't reports the right numbers and not downplaying the situation like SARS in 2003. They also need to encourage doctors to research the disease.
When the doctor who first originally discovered the disease brought it to the government to inspect it, he got rejected and they said that it wasn't a big deal. The Chinese gov't has repeatably denied grants for potentially life-saving cures as they say that the disease is not that bad. Once doctors find a cure-all they have to do is implement it.
I believe that these are the three steps to stop the coronavirus outbreak.

4, I agree with Henry that the coronavirus is affecting families throughout China, a country with a population of 1.3 billion. This is not a matter of "I think it is affecting families", the virus is 100% affecting everyone in the country. The timing of the disease was around the lunar new year, a time where there are many celebrations in china and where vendors are trying to sell as much food as possible. But because of the virus, many vendors can not sell off all there goods as no one is willing to buy them, and no one is willing to go outside. Many people prepare all year to sell their goods at this time of year and if they can't sell everything off their career is potentially over. Furthermore, schools in Beijing have been closed for an extra week after the lunar new year break, this severely affects the students in Beijing as many are preparing for there finals, something to can make or break there future.
Another impact is that because of the Quarantine people can't go home and visit their families an important part of one's life in Chinese culture. There were many cases where people who were on business trips in Wuhan when the virus first broke, and then they couldn't leave because of the quarantine them, and they still don't know when they can leave, affecting their business and their normal lifestyle. The Chinese government has torn up portions of all roads leaving and entering Hubei Province, making it impossible for people to leave. In conclusion, this massive virus has affected everyone in the country in some way shape or form.

  6. 1. Like Henry, I have never attended school with anything worse than a cold. When I am feeling under the weather I usually consider if I could get others sick. Whenever people come to school sick it always irritates me because they are putting others at risk of their sickness, so I try to not do the same. If I end up going to school sick, I always cover my cough and take all the necessary precautions to not infect others.

    2. I think putting all of the people with Coronavirus in quarantine is a good idea. I understand how one could think this is not good idea because not everyone's virus is the same. It would be more convenient if each person could have their own spaces, but we do not have those resources, so putting people together seems like the best option. This was the Coronavirus can not spread and infect more people.

    3. I agree with Henry that to stop the virus from spreading their needs to be a large space for people with coronavirus to go. This space could have different sections for different levels of the virus so that people could be with people of similar sickness levels. I also agree that there needs to be more research done on the Coronavirus to ensure everyone is getting proper treatment.

    4. Coronavirus has affected families by tearing them apart. If someone in your family has Coronavirus, they will have to go into quarantine, therefore you will not get to see them. Coronavirus has also taken some people's lives which would leave their families devastated.

  7. While I have never gone to school knowing I am sick, I have classmates who still attend school. I think that it is selfish because the people who do this don't care about the others they are just concerned about missing school.

I believe that putting people in the same room as each other is not a good idea because one person could have a sever case of the virus while another person could have a mild case. This could make everyone extremely ill. But, I also do agree with quarantines because it protects the public and healthy people from the desease.

For the coronavirus to be stopped the public has to be informed about new updates so they could understand how to act if someone was infected in their state or town. In addition, countries around the world should stop their planes from going to China, so the virus could be isolated in China.

The coronavirus has affected many families because it has separated them and even killed some members of families. An example of this, a women featured on the news who is a not a U.S citizen and developed the corona-virus had to stay in China while her husband an American and 3 year old daughter went to America.

  8. 1) I have gone to school sick before, but never with a fever. Although even without a fever, a virus can be contagious, I try my best to think about whether I am actually too sick to go to school for a few hours. I decided to warn my friends in advance and know that I can always go to the nurse if needed. I think some parts might sound selfish, but I wouldn’t go to school if I knew there was something that I could actually get people sick with. It’s also a major pain when you miss a bunch of school work because you were out. To prevent this, I’ll do as much as I can to make sure I can go to school but still feel healthy.

    2) I don’t agree with public quarantine but I do think for such epidemics, there are measures people have to take to make sure others are safe. I don’t think it’s fair that sick people are just put into this place where they are just surrounded by people, not knowing if they will actually get better or not. The worst part might have to be that there is a chance that people’s bodies could be healing themselves and slowly recovering while in quarantine. Having all these sick bodies in one place isn’t going to help them get rid of whatever virus they have.

    3) I agree with Henry that instead of public quarantine, there should be a special place where people with these viruses can get specific treatment. Instead of just clumping people together, not knowing that some might be healing and others might be getting worse, there should be a safe treatment center where people can be screened for symptoms and be put into proper categories/departments depending on how bad their health is.

    4) I believe that the corona virus has hurt so many families. Just the fact that there is a chance that someone could die at this very moment from it, is rather heartbreaking. Having people around you who might die or fall extremely ill must be such a burden on someone. It’s affected so many people and I personally don’t think I could bear it if one of my family members was diagnosed with the sickness.

  9. 1)So far at BBN, I have mostly stayed home when sick. I think primarily about whether the sickness will affect my ability to do the work and less about the sickness spreading. Many students at BBN want to go to school sick in fear of missing work and having to make it up. At my old school, this was the opposite as it was not a big deal if you missed school when you were sick. The makeup work was manageable and much less than at BBN.

2)I disagree with Henry and Jemma. I believe that quarantines are essential when the virus is as easily spread as Coronavirus. Here are some reasons why: Currently, Coronavirus doesn’t have a cure and whether you die or not is often predetermined by other medical conditions. This being said, it doesn’t matter whether you are confined to others who are also infected as you can’t be re-infected and the virus can not get worse. If the disease was difficult to transmit, then I would be against the quarantine since those afflicted could safely be with others, but Coronavirus is incredibly versatile and nearly impossible to control. When you consider both the effect and spread rate of the virus, everyone should be contained for the overall safety of the community. By quarantining those affected, quick care can be provided once a cure is discovered. On the other hand, without a quarantine rounding up everyone who is infected and trying to coordinate treatment is slow, ineffective, and endangers the general public as well as those already infected. I have confidence in the ability of trained doctors who are working to find a cure. To me not attempting to quarantine a deadly disease is like giving up. While the quality of life will be poor in the quarantines, I strongly believe that it is the most effective for long term public safety. I, however, do not have confidence in the Chinese Government’s ability to fairly and justly control the quarantines given their human rights record.

3)I believe that one of the most effective ways to stop the virus from spreading is quarantine. I know that this is a highly opposed view but, if the Chinese Government handles the logistics in the right way a quarantine is a solution. The quarantine stops the virus from spreading, makes treatment quick and effective, and is the best large scale control on the situation. In the hands of the US government quarantines are an ideal solution. What I see as the worst-case scenario, assuming a cure is available, is the virus spreading uncontrolled so by the time one person is treated multiple others will have already been infected. I heard a unique view from Leo, that this is a political move by Xi Jingpin. In an ideal quarantine, there is no risk of letting supplies in. To me, it sounds like the existing system in an extremely flawed quarantine system and that in an ideal quarantine this would not be happening. It is possible that the Chinese Government labeled the current system as a “quarantine” to stop protests, when in fact they have carried out more of a blockade rather than a true quarantine. I support an ideal quarantine, not a Chinese government improvised system.

4)I think that if Coronavirus spreads everyone will be impacted. Imagine having random relatives go without warning from fever to death. You would not be able to see them while they were dying in fear of catching their deadly disease. I can see the virus tearing families apart if it becomes widespread. One thing that shocks me is that I never heard anyone at school say to me Ebola could kill us. But I have heard people worried over the Coronavirus. Taking Ebola as an example, I can’t remember anyone worrying about the internal bleeding disease straight out of a horror movie. And everyone is worried about a pneumonia-like sickness that only kills about 2% compared to a death rate of 90% for ebola, making ebola about 45 times more deadly if you are infected. Not to say Coronavirus isn’t dangerous but the human race has faced worse.

  10. 1. I have never been majorly sick, where I’ve had a life-threatening disease or a spreading one. If any, I have had the common cold a couple times. But there is always still the possibility of any type of sickness spreading, whether it be severe or irrelevant.
    2. The idea of relocating newly arrived people to quarantine is a fair and good idea, as it benefits both the country, and the people being quarantined, therefore agreeing with Maddie. It eliminates the chance of entering diseases to the rest of the nation, and it takes care of the people being quarantined. There should not be complaints anyway because if they want to enter the U.S they will need to go by their rules.
    3. There is no easy way to stop the virus, but a major step that should be taken is cutting off travel to China and other countries within its vicinity. The virus could have strongly spread to nations in that part of the world and until a cure or antivirus is researched and made, there is no way to stop it other than avoiding it.
    4. Families are greatly affected by this. If a parent catches the virus, they can’t work; therefore, they can’t make money to support their children. And if unaware of having the virus, the parents or the children could unknowingly spread it to the other members of the family.

  11. 1.) I have never gone to school with more than a cough or a very mild cold but that is because I don't get sick very often. If I have a fever I usually would prefer to go but I wouldn't want to get anybody else sick.

2.) I disagree with Leo that Quarantine is a bad idea. Intrinsically it is a better idea for China to let someone infected and with a weak immune system die that to get a healthy person sick. While Leo says China may be trying to save its economic image, one can look to Chinese stocks to see that they were falling before stocks closed for the Chinese New Year last week. If one can assume that it would have an economic impact, then everyone can assume that. If everyone can assume that, then China could assume that, and if China knows everyone else knows that its economy would take a hit, they would not undergo this massive effort to preserve an image that they know is already corrupted. Even if they were doing it for appearances a quarantine would still be a good idea. Many on this list have said that there are many levels of the virus and several mutations of it but that does not support the narrative that it would still be intrinsically immoral to keep dangers to the greater population away from the general public. While China is essentially a Soviet Union-Esque authoritarian-communist style government, I believe that this time they are taking appropriate, if somewhat harsh precautions.

3.) To stop the virus from spreading they should get Chinese patients in American hospitals so that top-of-their-field American doctors can asses and study the virus without a scary government breathing down their necks.

4.) Coronavirus obviously took loved ones away from people which will lead to many single-parent households. This will lead to an economic downturn. It will cause a cultural shift to increase sanitization across China. It will have a minimal impact on the population because even if the death tolls double there would 13,860 people for every one dead. We should send our love and prayers to China as well as provide aid. We should also hope, however unlikely, that China will come to our aid in our moment of disaster.

  12. Yes, I didn’t miss school a lot when I was younger so I never asked my parents to stay home when I was sick, I didn’t really care if my sickness spread because I thought if someone else gets my cold I wouldn’t be sick anymore. Now if I’m sick I stay home because I don’t want to go to school.

I think quarantine has a good intention and reason but seems much harsher when used in real life. I agree with Natalie that it is also necessary for people with the virus to be placed in quarantine to prevent spreading, although, I think it would be fair if each family or person was placed in the own room instead of being squished in with a bunch of random sick people.

Although it seems harsh, I believe isolation and distance would keep the virus from spreading. Traveling with the virus should be prevented and there should be multiple updates about the Coronavirus for people to be informed about what would happen.

The coronavirus has been splitting families up by have sick members be placed into quarantine and be isolated from their family. There is a good reason for this but it’s still heartbreaking to have someone close to you get sick and also isolated from the world and their family.

  13. 1)Have you ever gone to school knowing you’re sick and not considered how your sickness could spread? What do you think of this?

Yes, I haven't miss school even though I was sick plenty of times but I did think of the
consequences. The illness I had when going to school was usually a mild cold that was under control. But I have seen people that are very sick come to school and that puts everyone at a higher risk

2)Do you think that putting people in a public quarantine is fair or even a good idea (as in all the sick people together)? Why or why not?
I think the only way to control the sickness is to put people in quarantine. Although harsh it is the only way to insure the security of the illness. The Coronavirus has rapidly spread and the only way to even have a shred of a chance of controlling it is quarantine.

3)What do you think that should be done to stop the virus from spreading? Why?
    I
think it should be handled like most outbreaks, quarantine cities and towns majorly affected by the virus and work on cure. That is the only way to try to secure the virus and make sure other don't catch it as well.

4)How do you think the coronavirus affected families? Why
The coronavirus has split up families and has forced people to go into quarantine and away from their family. Although not okay it is the only way to insure that the virus does not spread and that is the most important mission because if the virus has a millions will not die and thats more important then just one person or family.

  14. 1. Yes, I have gone to school when I’m not feeling well but that was not my decision. Every time I feel just a little sick I always warn my parents that I could spread my infection if I want to go to school. Yet every time they always force me to go to school, so I try to protect the health and safety of other students by not going to school, but my parents force me to go anyways.

    2. I agree with Ethan because if quarantine is effective at stopping the spread of a disease, then it should be used. However its effectiveness is doubtful because infected people interacted with others before they were put in quarantine. If isolation can be guaranteed completely and it has been effective so far against the coronavirus, quarantine should be utilized as much as possible because there are no other options to fight the virus. There is no vaccine and no cure, so isolating infected patients appears to be the only solution. It might not be the most comfortable solution for those that are quarantined, but sacrifices have to be made to prevent the coronavirus from becoming a global pandemic.

    3. As much money and effort as possible should be devoted to trying to invent a cure or vaccine for the coronavirus so that it can be stopped dead in its tracks. But until there is a cure (which is likely to take at least a couple of months), it is imperative to isolate infected patients and trace their interactions. Doing checks for fevers and other symptoms at international airports is another way that the virus can be kept at bay. Unfortunately, until a cure is discovered, quarantine appears to be the only option to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

    4. The separation of families in quarantine coming into the United States is obviously a terrible thing, but the coronavirus has hurt far more families in China and in Wuhan specifically. Individual members of families have been infected, tearing the family apart as they have to stay away from their father because he is in quarantine. The coronavirus is a terrible epidemic, and the world must collaborate to stop it before it evolves into something much worse.
