As of Friday, April 3rd, twelve states and the Northern Marianas Islands have announced that all schools will remain closed until the end of the academic year. On Thursday, the Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, signed an executive order stating that schools will be closed until the end of the year unless social distancing rules are altered. Jennifer McCormick, the superintendent of Indiana Public Instruction, ordered that schools would not be reopening this year. California’s chief of education along with Brian Kemp, the Governor of Georgia, both announced that school campuses would be closed and the second semester of the year would be canceled. States such as California, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania have closed schools with no date to return, whereas some states will still potentially return to school in April or May if social distancing rules are lifted. Social distancing policies in effect in most states require that when in public, people stay at least six feet apart. While social distancing is helpful, the most effective way to protect yourself and others is to stay at home. On Tuesday night on MSNBC, Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, claimed that he believed social distancing would be prolonged due to a large number of people not practicing social distancing. The more people resist social distancing, the longer the schools will be closed. Read more to find out about this topic here:

1. I do believe that school should be closed for the rest of the year. I do not think it is in the best interests of anyone to be put into space where one is surrounded by people the entire time. It is unreasonable to expect students to put lives of their friends and family at risk. I think that when there is an easily accessible vaccination, that is when we should come back to school.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that people have been so resistant is because they have taken their rights too seriously and so whenever those rights are threatened they take it personally as a violation of their rights instead of the government asking them to do something for the greater good. It is these people's ignorance and arrogance of the situation that will make this epidemic last much longer than it needs to. If these people do not stop purposely staying outside then this quarantine will last well into summer.
3. I believe that Trump can and should declare a nation-wide lockdown. President Trump and Congress have Implied Power and within that the Elastic Clause. The Elastic Clause gives Congress the power to make any law in times of crisis such as this one. Some of the more prepared countries, such as Denmark, initiated a lock down as soon as it became a crisis. This is what the government should have/do.
4. The only time I leave the premises of my house is to walk my dog. I unfortunately, do not leave the house to hang out with friends or relatives. As for guidelines I feel like it is just common sense, try to stay 6 feet away, wash your hands often, and make minimal contact with people outside of immediate family.
ReplyDeleteIf school was safe to return I would want schools to open. However, the current state of coronavirus is terrible therefore; I believe that schools should be closed for the rest of the semester until it is much safer.
People have been resistant to social distancing because they feel its unnecessary. In addition, some people don't think coronavirus is that serious, therefore; they might go out every-night with friends and family not thinking about spreading the disease to others even though there are social distancing "rules".
I do think Trump should declare a nationwide stay at home order. This would prevent the spread of coronavirus therefore; ending it. By having this national lockdown less people would die from this virus. Unfortunately, many people will not follow it because they feel its unnecessary even though it could result in a fine or jail time.
Yes, I have followed the social distancing rules. I don't hang out with any friends and relatives only my immediate family which live in my house. I think I know most of the existing rules which are, you can't go out for unnecessary trips and in Boston you have to be inside before 8. In addition, its been recommended that you wear a mask.
1, Yes I do believe that schools should be closed for the rest of the school year. We shouldn't be taking any chances with a novel virus. Even if cases drastically decrease this deadly virus still has a chance to come back again, as it is 1, highly contagious, and 2, it is a new virus that we do not know a lot about. This virus has the potential to cause more havoc and chaos so we must close schools for the rest of the year.
ReplyDelete2, People are always prone to making comparisons when a new unknown thing appears. They do this because it makes them feel more comfortable as they are afraid of new. Many people compare the coronavirus to the flu, although they have some similarities they have these seemingly small differences, contrary to what many people think, these differences are actually huge. An example of this is the death rate of coronavirus, which is around 2 percent. At first glance this may seem small but it is 20 times larger the the death rate of the flu.
When people make these disgusting and awful comparisons they become oblivious of the facts, the fact that this virus, COVID 19 is a severe threat to all age groups and people.
3, Trump should definitely have a nationwide stay at home order. He needs to do something to make the irresponsible and illogical governors of deep red states change. Stay at home orders now and taking more action now will be significant in the future.
4, Like Thomas, I have been following the coronavirus regulations meticulously. I only leave the house late at night or very early in the morning, I try to minimize how much I touch my face and what I touch when I am outside. I also haven't met up with any other friends after break. I am also pretty confident that I know all the guidelines.

ReplyDelete1. At this moment in time, the best choice appears to be that schools should remain closed for the rest of the school year. However, as previously stated by Thomas, if it is safe to return to school, students should be obliged to go. The quality of education online isn’t as effective as face-to-face, and if we have the chance to that again, we should definitely take advantage of it for as long we are in the clear.
ReplyDelete2. Most people violate the social distancing rules mainly because they are bored. Staying at home isolated with your family can be very much challenging. It only leaves texting and facetiming as forms of any communication, and some people just can’t handle it. The only other reason I can think of, that people would resist social distancing, is simply because they are the ignorant and stubborn type of people. They don’t like to be told what to do, even it is for their own health and well-being.
3. I disagree with the idea of Trump implementing a nationwide lockdown. As it will make the quarantining process much more efficient and quicker, it also violates the people’s freedom of movement. This lockdown would also backfire if somebody absolutely needed to leave their home, for even just fresh air.
4. This social distancing is going very well for me. I have not met up with a single soul besides my family, since the middle of our actual spring break. All I know about social distancing is to stay 6 feet away from people other than my immediate family, to wash my hands more frequently, and to avoid touching unnecessary items that could possibly be contaminated.
1. As Yonathan stated I do believe that if it's still unsafe to go back to school then schools should remain closed but if there is a chance to go back then we have to take that chance because the education isn't the same with online learning.
ReplyDelete2. I think people are resistant of social-distancing because they feel that being forced into isolation violates there rights. I also agree with Yonathan when he says people mainly resist social-distancing because they are bored. Also most people that do this are young adults because at the beginning we were told that corona only affects the elderly so young people are not worried for their health. They think nothing is going to happen to them which is not true but people still believe this.
3. I think Trump should order a nation-wide stay at home order because it will making the quarantine go by faster because the virus would most likely stop spreading this. Although my question is how would he enforce this because he cannot just have a police officer stand in front of everyone's house making sure no one leaves. This would be so hard to control so I believe it isn't necessary because for now most people are social-distancing.
4. I have followed the rules very well, probably because I'm forced by my parents to stay home but I haven't left my house in 3 weeks and I'm literally driving myself crazy. I do not hangout with anyone that doesn't live in my house. I don't exactly know the rules but I think I'm following them pretty well since I haven't left my house.
1. I do believe that school should be canceled for the rest of the year. As long as there is any possibility students of BBN have or have been exposed to corona it would not make any sense to restart school. Putting students back in school would put everyone at high risk if even just one person had or was exposed to corona.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that people are resisting social distancing because they feel it violates there rights. I agree with Valentina and Yonathan that people are simply just bored and don't realize how impactful social distancing can be if everyone decides to cooperate.
3. I do support the idea of trump instituting a nationwide stay at home order. In my opinion, the most effective way of preventing the spread of the virus is by completely cutting people off from each other, therefore no new cases could occur.
4. I have for the most part completely followed social distancing rules. I have not interacted with anyone outside of my family, except for those I pass in markets, streets, etc. The one semi-rule I have violated is leaving my state and going to another, however, I have not interacted with people other than my family in doing so.1. 1) If the current situation regarding coronavirus continues, I do believe schools should stay closed for the rest of the year. If students were to return to school before the virus died down, it could easily spread through the school and contaminate everyone. It would not be logical to return to school at all this year if the current conditions of the virus continue. However, if something changes with the virus, such as a cure or another improvement, then there may be a chance students can return back to school before the year ends.
ReplyDelete2) I think people are resistant to social distance because as Thomas says, they believe it is unnecessary. Usually, people think they are living in an isolated bubble where the virus can’t touch them until someone they know is affected by it. Until then, most people believe the virus won’t hurt them, and so they continue their daily lives instead of social distancing.
3) I don’t think Trump should put a nationwide stay at home order into effect because although it would force everyone to quarantine themselves, it would make those who already are stuck inside most of the day to never get any fresh air. Most people are already quarantining as it is, and to force everyone to stay inside all the time would cause a lot of tension and rivalry. Also, some people might think a nationwide lockdown violates their freedom.
4) I have followed the social distancing rules well. My family is in Vermont, and we are very isolated from the rest of the world. I haven’t seen any people outside my family in person for a very long time, except for some delivery workers. I do feel like I know the guidelines very well.
1. I agree with Maddie that schools should be closed for the rest of the year. Even if the peak is behind us and there are only a couple of cases in Massachusetts, the reopening of schools could create another wave of new infections, starting the whole cycle again. It is imperative that schools only be opened once public health officials are certain that there is no risk of another massive wave and it is unlikely that we will be at that point by June.
ReplyDelete2. More than most other countries, Americans have a highly individualistic streak and hate the government telling them what to do. Many people think that if they haven't personally been affected or seen the impacts of the coronavirus there is no reason for them to obey orders given from some career politicians in Washington.
3. Trump should not issue a stay-at-home order for the entire United States because different areas of the country are experiencing different levels of impact from the disease. It is far better for state governments to make that judgment state by state rather than an umbrella order. While Congress and the President have powers given to them by the elastic clause to enforce a national stay-at-home order, they are treading on shaky ground because an overreaching order could violate the liberty guaranteed to U.S. citizens in the Fourteenth Amendment.
4. It's impossible to be perfect in following the guidelines, but I haven't hung out with people recently and try to stay six feet apart from others when I am outside, and I know most of the restrictions and recommended guidelines.
1) I do believe that schools should be closed the rest of the year if it is unsafe for students to return. It is important that the community (faculty, staff, students, and family) are all safe. Looking ahead, there is a high chance that we will close for the rest of the year. There won’t be a way to ensure that the community is safe till a vaccine is made, which might be a year from now.
ReplyDelete2) I think a lot of people just aren’t taking this virus seriously. I do think that by now, everyone in the world knows about the coronavirus, whether it has affected them or not. But just because people know about it, doesn’t mean they won’t take it seriously. Like Leo said, people will make comparisons between it and other pandemics, thinking that it isn’t serious so they shouldn’t worry. It’s not something we should be comparing when it’s killing millions of people.
3) I think that Trump should declare a nation-wide stay at home order, ensuring the safety of everyone. I agree with Thomas, that if we don’t expose ourselves to the virus, we likely won’t catch it. A stay at home order would prevent the virus from spreading much further until a vaccine is created.
4) The only times I go outside are when I’m playing in my backyard, going for a hike, or taking a walk. Although, I do abide by the social-distancing rules and stay 6 feet away from anyone else (besides my family), that doesn’t mean I don’t go outside to enjoy the fresh air. I try to go out once a day even if it’s just to read on the deck. Even with social-distancing rules, I’ve found it important to get fresh air and not be cooped up in my house all day. The only person that I’ve come in contact with that hasn’t been family is my dad’s girlfriend, but the risk isn’t extremely high because we’ve been around each other for a while and if one of us had it, the other one would have caught it by now.
1)
ReplyDeleteI believe that schools should be closed for the rest of the year. My reasoning is people losing their education for several months is worth it if it saves a couple of kids from potentially dying. We don’t know a lot about this disease so we should not be taking risks, we should be as safe as we can and let it run its course. We will clean up the mess in the aftermath.
2)
I believe it's human nature to be aggravated or annoyed by major change. Moreover, some families struggle to put food on the table and are willing to sacrifice their health for their families and themselves. Some are ignorant to the virus, some are uneducated, and some people have perfectly valid reasons for leaving their homes. I believe that people should follow the course that they believe is appropriate for them and their families, as long as they follow all the guidelines and be safe. However, if they are jeopardizing someone else's safety, that's when their personal choice ends.
3)
I don’t believe he should release an order to stay at home, he should suggest it. However, some people in the blog are saying that would mean people would not be able to go out and get fresh air, which is absurd, nothing stops someone from stepping outside and getting some fresh air. I disagree with Henry that the Elastic Clause should have the power to override the sovereignty of the states in this case, any order like the one proposed would be a massive overreach of government, it is an umbrella order and it is better for it to be handled state-by-state. Not to mention if the states are not given the power to dictate themselves now, how will they be expected to to dictate themselves if the federal gov’t becomes tyrannical. For Leo’s point, it is important to point out that many DNC leaders in blue states strongly opposed the travel ban to China in early March before hypocritically reversing course in late March when it became a problem in their states. Also Pelosi, AOC, Biden, Sanders, Cuomo and Schumer all opposed the travel ban as well before doing a complete 180 on regulation strength.
4)
I have been following all the guidelines.I have only met up with one relative during vacation. I think I know all the guidelines I am supposed to follow. However, guidelines are changing frequently so it is important to stay up to date on them.
1. Since we have not yet reached the peak of coronavirus and people are not following the social distancing rules, I think it will be necessary to keep school closed this year and keep everyone safe and hopefully have coronavirus spread less. It wouldn’t make sense to reopen school at the risk of people’s health.
ReplyDelete2. Some people think that coronavirus is not that big of a deal. Some people who are young and have a healthy immune system know that they will be okay if they get it, but the problem is that they will then spread it to many other people who they do not consider. Others may think that the guidelines of social distancing are limiting their rights, not realizing how many other people they could be endangering by disregarding the guidelines.
3. I think that Trump should order a nationwide lockdown. This will hopefully stop the spreading of the virus and keep many more people safe. Since people aren’t listening to the social distancing rules I think that a lockdown would be effective. However, I agree with Valentina that this would be hard to enforce.
4. Yes, my family and I have followed the social distancing rules. When I do go outside I am careful to stay six feet away from people in case I spread it to others, not touch my face, and wash my hands as soon as I get home.
1. I agree with Henry and I believe that schools should remain closed for the rest of the 2020 school year. This time now is when the virus is most likely to spread and if we could continue to lock down for just another few months we could hopefully put the virus behind us. It is not worth it to give up now, we have already canceled schools and committed to doing so until May 14th in Massachusetts. Extending school closures until the fall could make sure our efforts don’t go to waste. We have also seen that schools are able to run remotely and while it is an inconvenience and not as effective, learning will not halt entirely. For these reasons, it is essential that schools remain closed until the next school year.
ReplyDelete2. I think that being resistant to the government is part of our country’s history and culture. Our country was built on freedom, patriotism, and rebellion. It is because of this attitude that many Americans believe that it is their “right” to defy government regulation. The “It’s my country and I’ll do what I please” mindset is particularly harmful during the coronavirus because it only takes a few defiant citizens to infect a large group of people. The mixed messages and relaxed stance from the government further contribute to this mindset.
3. Trump cannot and should not try to universally shut down states. Each state must pick their stance on the issue, deciding to have more severe or more relaxed restrictions depending on their unique circumstances (e.g. urban vs rural). The President attempting to create a one size fit’s all plan, which he logically and legally cannot, is a poor idea. States are the ones with the constitutional power to order quarantines and it is legally and logically their responsibility to do so.
4. I have tried to follow social distancing rules and have been successful for the most part, but certain things are difficult to remember. I have come in contact with one family from New York multiple times this past week. After leaving New York, the family quarantined themselves for two weeks in Maine. In order to be extra careful, we have stayed six feet apart. I have realized however that I have broken the rules unknowingly multiple times. For example, we played basketball, and we both touched the ball and passed it back and forth so we touched the same object. What makes social distancing so hard is not the space, but the surfaces.
